Beggar Basics Bootcamp
Your MIni-mission:
BEGGar BASICS BOOTCAMP
Why This Game Rocks
In a collapse scenario, you may find yourself without resources and need to ask for help from strangers. This exercise will help you practice the critical skill of asking for assistance, making you more adaptable and resilient in survival situations. Additionally, by understanding the tactics used in begging, you can better identify potential threats in a survival situation and avoid falling prey to deception.
Overview
The “Beggar Basics Bootcamp” is a social experiment designed to test your ability to approach strangers and ask for help—specifically money. The goal is to get at least $1 from a total stranger, which will challenge your social skills and help you understand the dynamics of begging, an strategic survival skill when all other resources are depleted. You’ll also learn how to recognize similar tactics used by others who might approach you in a post-collapse situation.
Materials Needed
- A safe, public location with foot traffic
- Confidence and determination
- A reason to ask for money (without being deceptive or illegal)
Step-By-Step Instructions
- Choose a Safe Public Space: Find a well-populated public space, such as a park, street, or shopping area, where you can interact with people.
- Prepare Your Approach: Think of a legitimate reason “why” someone would need $1. In social dynamics, offering a reason you need the money greatly increases your chances of compliance.
- Identify Your Target: Try to determine who in your surroundings looks more approachable and note the characteristics of why you made that determination. Also, from experience, asking someone of the same gender may yield better results, as they may feel more comfortable engaging with you.
- Ask For The Dollar: Politely ask someone for $1, using your reason from Step 2, such as: “Excuse me, could you spare $1 because I need to [insert reason].”
- Gauge Their Response: Pay attention to their body language and reaction. If they seem uncomfortable or unwilling, thank them and move on to another person.
- Disengage From Conflict: If someone gets upset or reacts negatively, disengage politely and move on to the next person. Safety is your priority.
- Keep Going Until Success: Continue approaching people until you successfully get at least $1 from a stranger.
Tips From The Trenches
Don’t Fake Homelessness: People can usually tell if you’re pretending to be homeless, and it can come across as dishonest, which may hurt your chances of success.
Stay Polite: You’re likely to face rejection, so remain calm and polite. A negative reaction could escalate a situation unnecessarily.
Experiment With Different Reasons: Try different reasons for needing $1 and observe which approaches seem to work best.
Be Honest and Safe: Never make up false stories that could be deemed “illegal” – such as claiming you’re collecting money for a charity – as this can backfire and lead to trouble.
